What is CoastSmart?

CoastSmart is a public safety project designed to enhance coastal safety along the shoreline and in the surfzone. Originally based in the Pacific Rim region of British Columbia, the project is dedicated to reducing water-associated public risk across Canada.

CoastSmart is a communication and education campaign which highlights the common hazards at waterfronts, helps visitors avoid those hazards, and provides safety advice to enjoying coastal recreation.

How can you get involved?

Interested in becoming an active part of the CoastSmart Network? There are many ways to get involved in coastal safety! Here are just a few:

  1. Encourage people to visit the CoastSmart website to learn about water hazards and how to avoid them. This website features a CoastSmart quiz (where you can earn a digital badge upon successful completion), interactive experiences, safety advice, real-life stories, and campaign videos.
  2. Promote the CoastSmart campaign and website with a link or web button or banner on your own website. As a member of the CoastSmart network, we will list your business and include a link back to your website. (recriprocal link request form)
  3. Talk to friends, colleagues, customers, and family about the campaign. Give them the web address, a rack card, or other CoastSmart resource to help them spread the message for us.
  4. Retweet, like, post and share our CoastSmart stories on your social channels. Include safety advice and use the hashtag #CoastSmart on your own posts.
  5. Share local promotional opportunities and events with your organization or the CoastSmart network.
  6. Include CoastSmart safety messages and campaign tools in other events or activities you have planned – and download any resources that will help you.

Who created CoastSmart?

The original pilot project was led by Parks Canada, the District of Tofino and the District of Ucluelet and was made possible by funding from the Government of Canada. CoastSmart is supported by a network of local businesses and by our education partner, AdventureSmart.
